Eastman Professor Contributes to Innovative Textbook on Oral Health

Professor Ian Needleman from the UCL Eastman Dental Institute (EDI) has contributed a chapter to an innovative textbook on oral health research design. The chapter focuses on the effective use of research data for evidence-based oral health care and was co-authored with Professor Helen Worthington from the University of Manchester.

Statistical and Methodological Aspects of Oral Health Research explains contemporary developments in oral health research with practical guidance in achieving high quality studies and their analysis. These include clinical trials, epidemiological designs, qualitative studies, genetic research, Bayesian approaches and studies of diagnostic accuracy.

The book is edited by Prof Lessafre and Dominique Declerck from Leuven, Belgium, Prof Leroux, University of Washington, USA and Prof Feine, McGill University, Canada representing an international team of experts. It is designed as a practical guide to clinical researchers, biostatisticians and readers of oral health research. With the increasing emphasis placed on the importance of oral health and preventive measures in dentistry by the Department of Health, the book is likely to become a standard text for all oral health researchers.

Professor Needleman is a well-respected authority on evidence-based oral health care. He holds the positions of Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Evidence-based Healthcare at UCL EDI and Honorary Consultant at UCLHT Eastman Dental Hospital. He is a Specialist in Periodontology and also Director of the International Centre for Evidence-based Oral Health (ICEBOH) based at the Eastman. Professor Needleman’s clinical expertise is in non-surgical and advanced surgical management of the periodontal diseases, including regenerative and reconstructive surgery.
